William "Bill" Dassinger was a recipient of two Purple Hearts and fought in WW II as a part of the 487 Armed Infantry Battalion - rifleman and mortar gunner. His lifelong friend, Tom J. Kelly (now deceased) was a Medal Of Honor winner and as they both returned to civilian life, they regularly attended functions in New York City and Washington DC. Bill Dassinger was 87 years old and he died on Tuesday April 16th of heart failure. He was living in Prescott, Arizona and was currently a patient at the VA Hospital in Phoenix. Bill Dassinger was a longtime head bartender at the famous Toots Shor's bar located on W. 52nd Street. The bar was a celebrity place to be in the 1960s and frequented by the likes of Jackie Gleason, who had his own table, Frank Sinatra, Mickey Mantle, Bella Abzug, Ted Kennedy to name a few. As Toots' closed, Bill became a bartender at the Glen Ridge Country Club in New Jersey prior to retiring to Prescott, Arizona. Mr. Dassinger was born in Philadelphia but grew up in New York City - Yorkville section. He moved to Jersey City, NJ along with his older brother George's family and later moved to Bloomfield, NJ. Surviving are his niece Gloria, nephew George and their Mom, Hedy Dassinger. Mr. Dassinger was flown back to New Jersey on April 26th where he will be laid to rest in Cloverleaf cemetery located in Woodbridge, NJ on May 1st. A small military service is planned in his honor and friends are asked to donate to their favored charities in his memory.
