Walter S. Hanks passed away on Friday, August 21, 2015 at his home in the Avenel section of Woodbridge Township. He was 81 years old. Born in Rahway, he has resided in Avenel since 1957. Mr. Hanks served in the United States Coast Guard from 1952 until 1956. Mr. Hanks retired in 2002 after 15 years as a bus driver with Middlesex County Area Transport; and had previously owned and operated H&H Radio and TV in Rahway for many years. He was a life member of Avenel Fire Company Number One, where he served as chief in 1970 and president in 1977-1978; and was past Woodbridge Township District #5 fire commissioner. Mr. Hanks was predeceased by his wife, Anne R. Volpe Hanks, in 2013. Surviving are a daughter, Donna Prokop, of Rahway; a son, Walter E. Hanks and his wife, Jane, of Avenel; and two grandchildren, Danielle and Kimberly Hanks. A Funeral service will take place on Tuesday, August 25, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at the Costello-Koyen Funeral Home (www.costello-koyen.com), 399 Avenel St., Avenel, NJ 07001. Interment will follow in Clover Leaf Memorial Park, Woodbridge. Visitation will be on Monday from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
