It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Steven Thompson, who died peacefully on July 3, 2026 at the age of 69.
Steve was born on May 25, 1957 in Jersey City, NJ to George and Jeannette Thompson. He was raised in Woodbridge, NJ, where he attended Woodbridge High School and was a member of the Marching Barrons.
Steve spent 35 years working as a union electrician with IBEW Local #164, working on major projects including the Prudential Center in Newark, MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford and overseeing the installation of EZ-Pass at multiple exits along the NJ Turnpike. He regularly donated his time to the annual Christmas in April event, joining union laborers in completing home maintenance projects in the Jersey City area.
A man of faith, Steve was a former parishioner of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter in Rahway, where he served in various roles including senior warden, head of buildings and grounds, and choir member. He also frequently volunteered at the Food For Friends Soup Kitchen in Rahway, and the Trinity Food Pantry in Woodbridge.
An avid sports fan, Steve was a long-time supporter of the Steelers, Mets, and Devils.
Steve was predeceased by his son, Sawyer, his parents, and his brother and sister-in-law, George and Lauretta Thompson.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Laurie, his son, Gordon (Liz) of Midland, MI, his grandchildren, Nate and Olive, and his niece, Laura (Jegar) of Hamilton, NJ.
Steve's family would like to thank his friends: Kevin, TJ, Jack, John, Joe and Mark, who were with him through thick and thin. The family would also like to thank the staff at JFK Hospital, including 3 Central, the ICU and the hospice department for taking such good care of him.
Friends and family may call from 3 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 7, at Costello-Greiner Funeral Home, 44 Green Street, Woodbridge, New Jersey. There will be a private cremation. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes memorial donations to World Central Kitchen in honor of Steve.
