Stephen Terebetsky passed away on Monday, June 1, 2026 at JFK Medical Center in Edison, NJ. He was 85 years old.
Born on April 11, 1941 to the late Steven and Helen Terebetsky in Perth Amboy, he was raised in Carteret and was a longtime resident of the Avenel section of Woodbridge Township.
He attended Carteret High School, and was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving as a Medic. Stephen worked as a Group Leader with Bristol-Myers Squibb in Cranbury for over 25 years before retiring in 2004.
Stephen was a Life Member of the Avenel Fire Company #1, where he served as Chief in 1986 and President from 1996 to 1997. He was a Fire Instructor for the Woodbridge Township Fire Academy and a Life Member and Past President of the Woodbridge Township Fire Officers Association.
He was a Life Member of the New Jersey State Firemen’s Association and the Avenel Exempt Firemen’s Association. He was a Representative of the Avenel Firemen’s Relief Association since 1991 and has been its President since 1998. He was a member of the New Jersey Volunteer Fire Chief’s Association and a former Public Safety Trustee for the 200 Club of Middlesex County.
Surviving Stephen is his wife of 61 years, Margaret Terebetsky; his son Anthony Terebetsky and his wife Lauren of Avenel; his sister Catherine Tower and her husband Richard of Pen Argyl, PA; and his two cherished grandchildren Abigail and Ryan.
Funeral Services will take place on Saturday, June 6, 2026 at 9:30 a.m. from Costello-Koyen Funeral Home, 399 Avenel Street, Avenel, NJ 07001. A Funeral Mass will follow at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Andrew Roman Catholic Church in Avenel. Committal service will take place at Saint Gertrude Cemetery in Colonia. Visitation for family and friends will take place on Friday June 5, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. till 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers that donations in Stephen’s memory be made out to St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital or to the Avenel Fire Company #1.
