Stella M. De Palma, loving mother and grandmother, passed away on Monday, January 19, 2015 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. She was 80 years old. Born in Newark, she has resided in the Avenel section of Woodbridge Township and Manahawkin for most of her life. Mrs. De Palma was employed as a paraprofessional with the Woodbridge Township Board of Education at Matthew Jago School in Sewaren for 17 years until retiring in 1998. She was a devoted communicant of Saint Andrew Catholic Church in Avenel, and volunteered for several years at the pharmacy department of Southern Ocean County Medical Center in Manahawkin. She was predeceased by her husband, Nicholas C. De Palma, in 1996; and a brother, Thomas Nicastro. Surviving are two daughters, Judith "Jodie" De Palma of Avenel and Diane Calaguire and her husband, John, of Brick; two sons, Nicholas De Palma and his wife, Heide, of Avenel and Joseph De Palma and his wife, Katie, of Woodbridge, VA; two sisters, Diane Lombardi of Belleville and Jeannie Di Domenico of Newark; a brother, Phillip Nicastro, of Whippany; and four grandchildren, Alexis Calaguire, Madison De Palma, Evan De Palma and Andrew De Palma. Funeral services will be on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 9:00 a.m. from the Costello-Koyen Funeral Home, 399 Avenel Street, Avenel. A Mass of Resurrection will follow at 9:30 a.m. at Saint Andrew's Catholic Church, Avenel. Interment will be in Saint Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia. Visitation will be on Friday from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Stella's memory to Saint Andrew's Catholic Church.
