Obituary

Stella B. “Stasia” Cohorsky passed away on Tuesday, July 28, 2026 at JFK Medical Center in Edison. She was 98 years old.

Born in Perth Amboy on January 5, 1928 to the late Angeline and Walter Szelc, she resided in the Avenel section of Woodbridge Township for many years where she raised her family as a dedicated wife, mother and homemaker before moving to Iselin in 2008.

Mrs. Cohorsky was employed as a secretary with Cohorsky Construction in Avenel for 42 years before retiring in 1991; and enjoyed travelling, weekly card games with friends and, especially, time spent with family.

She was a communicant of Saint Andrew Catholic Church in Avenel; and former member of Golden Circle, Avenel Senior Citizens, Avenel Firehouse Auxiliary and the Ladies Auxiliary of Avenel Memorial Post 7154, Veterans of Foreign Wars.

In addition to her parents Stasia was predeceased by her beloved husband, Stephen J. Cohorsky, Sr., in 1992; sons, Stephen J. Cohorsky, Jr. in 2002 and Bruce J. Cohorsky, in 2006; sisters, Rosalind Pagano, Sophie Kuper, Helen Seiler and Michaeline Kolodinsky; brothers, Walter Szelc, Jacob Szelc, Frank Szelc and Felix Szelc; and grandson, Stephen Cohorsky III, in 2024.

Surviving are her son, Barry J. Cohorsky and his wife, Penny, of Hernando Beach, FL; grandsons, Scott and his wife, Sandra, Alexander and Andrew; great grandsons, Scotty and Riley; daughter in law, Brenda; and many loving nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, August 5, 2026 from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Costello-Koyen Funeral Home, 399 Avenel Street, Avenel. Funeral services will take place on Thursday, August 6, 2026 at 9:30 a.m. from the funeral home followed at 10:00 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial at Saint Andrew Catholic Church, Avenel. Entombment will be in Saint James Chapel Mausoleum, Woodbridge.

In lieu of flowers contributions to Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital (stjude.org) or the American Cancer Society (American Cancer Society) in Mrs. Cohorsky’s memory would be greatly appreciated by her loved ones.
