On April 9, 2020; Sammy was called home by his heavenly father. Sammy Johnson was born in Newark, New Jersey on September 4, 1947 to the late Bertha Johnson and John Johnson. He received his education in the Newark, New Jersey school system. He also attended Bloomfield College in Bloomfield, New Jersey and Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey. Sammy entered the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He served his country in Vietnam and was honorably discharged.

Sammy met and married the love of his life, Diane Melton. On September 12, 1970; they were joined in holy matrimony. Of this union, one child was born; Letta Luhnek. Sammy loved Letta with all his heart and she was truly a Daddy's Girl. Letta loved her father dearly.

Sammy received the Lord Jesus Christ at an early age, he attended the Evangel Church of Scotch Plains, NJ.

Sammy was employed as a supervisor at Greystone Psychiatric Hospital in Morristown, NJ where he retired after 30 years of service.

Sammy loved to travel with his wife Diane, and they did so until his health began to fail. He was a lover of jazz music and an avid reader. He loved sports and his favorite team was the New York Giants.

Sammy loved family, and was a loving and giving person. He was loved by all who knew him, and he will be truly missed.

He leaves to cherish his memory; his loving a devoting wife of 49 years Diane, a loving daughter Letta Luhnek, one grandchild; Gabriela Cevallos, son in law; James Cartwright, two sisters; Thelma Wilson and Viola Robinson, four sister-in-laws; Carolyn Franklin, Linda Mann, Thelma Jacobs, and Deborah Middleton, three brother-in-laws; Robert Robinson, Charles Rutherford and George Mann, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends. Four brothers preceded him in death; Norman, Edward, John and Alfred.
