Ruth E. Hazen of Perth Amboy passed away on Monday, August 26, 2013 at Raritan Bay Medical Center in Perth Amboy. She was 89 years old. Born in Oberlin, Kansas, she resided in Westfield before moving to Perth Amboy 24 years ago. Mrs. Hazen was a graduate of Saint Catherine's Hospital School of Nursing in Ohama, Nebraska, studied at the University of Michigan and received her Bachelor and Masters degrees from Jersey City State College, Jersey City. She received her pilots license in 1944 before entering the United States Navy, serving as a Nurse during World War II. Mrs. Hazen started her nursing career at Saint Catherine's Hospital in Omaha and retired while working as a Visiting Nurse. She was a communicant of Blessed John Paul II Parish, St. Mary's Church in Perth Amboy. She was predeceased by two sisters, Patricia Mitchell and Helen Nelson; and a brother, Thomas Farrell. She is survived by her husband, George Hazen; six children, Stephen Hazen and his wife, Maria Limarzi, of Bethesda, MD, Timothy Hazen and his wife, Janet Shaw, of Savannah, GA, Carl Hazen and his wife, Susan, of Bloomfield, Mary Johnston and her husband, Jim, of Lexington, MA, Michael Hazen of Avenel, and Margaret Lee and her Husband, Dr. John Lee, of Fullerton, CA; 15 grandchildren; and 9 great grandchildren. Funeral will take place Friday, August 30, 2013 at 10:00 at Blessed John Paul II Parish, St. Mary's Church, Mechanic at Center Street, Perth Amboy. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Perth Amboy. Visitation will be Thursday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Costello-Greiner Funeral Home, 44 Green Street at Barron Avenue, Woodbridge.
