Obituary

Rose Marie Remias of Highlands, NJ, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, May 6, 2025 after an extended illness. She was the daughter of the late Margaret Remias and granddaughter of the late Laszlo and Mary nee Maria Kondas Remias. Rose Marie's grandparents arrived in the US at the turn of the 20th century, settling in Passaic, NJ. In the 1920's, the family of six (Laszlo, Mary and their children, Rose, Margaret, Joseph and Jim) relocated to Windber, PA, where Rose Marie was born on June 6, 1933.

In the early 1940's, the entire Remias family relocated to Perth Amboy, NJ. Rose Marie's uncle, Joseph Remias, entered a Roman Catholic Seminary, was ordained a priest and became a US Navy Chaplain and officer.

Rose Marie attended Perth Amboy High School in New Jersey. She entered the teaching profession and specialized in high school level mathematics. She truly enjoyed interacting with her students throughout the school year.

Rose Marie also enjoyed travel and South Eastern Florida, Texas, Pennsylvania and Hungary were her favorite destinations.

Her family would travel to Sykesville, PA to visit Rose Marie's Grandmothers sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Stephen Pettey and family. Despite the distance, the two families kept in close contact. Stephen and Barbara's daughter, Rosalie, lived with the Remias family while employed as a chef in New York City. Rosalie returned to Sykesville, PA, and married George Gula, Sr. and they had four sons: George M., Stephen, James and Paul. After George Sr. passed away, Rosalie married Peter Gula and they kept in close contact with the Remias family.

Rose Marie's family diminished with the passing of her grandparents, her Uncle Jim, her Mom Margaret and her Aunt Rose. Her Uncle Joe took great care of Rose Marie's welfare and eventually, Fr. Joe invited her to live in his home in the Highlands. Fr. Joe was the last remaining person in her immediate family.

Rose Marie's cousin, George M. Gula made frequent extended trips to New Jersey to help care for Rose Marie. She would occasionally travel to George's home when his schedule required him to stay in Sykesville, Pa. George went above and beyond to provide care for Rose Marie. Sadly, George passed away on August 5, 2024 and Rose Marie had medical home care.

Rose Marie will be greatly missed by her friends and surviving cousins.
