Robert Kelly of the Iselin section of Woodbridge Township passed away on Sunday, August 30, 2020 at Haven Hospice at JFK Medical Center, Edison. He was 82 years old.
Born and raised in Glasgow, Scotland, he joined the British army at age 17 and served as a diesel mechanic for four years. He immigrated to Charlotte, NC in 1964 and shortly after married Sheena Paterson, his wife of 55 years. He has resided in Iselin since 1970.
Mr. Kelly was employed as a Mason Tender through Construction and General Building Laborer's Local #79 in New York for 20 years before retiring in 2000.
Known as Boabby to his friends and those who loved him, his family meant the world to him and he had no greater pleasure than to watch his grandchildren compete in their various sports and activities. He was a longtime member of the Glasgow Celtic Supporters Club and a Gold Member of the Scots American Club, both in Kearny NJ. He was also a member of Saint Cecelia's Council #3639, Knights of Columbus, Iselin.
Mr. Kelly was predeceased by his mother, Eva McMillan Kelly, his infant brother Bernard and sister Jean Paterson.
Surviving are his wife Sheena Paterson Kelly; sons, Robert Kelly and his wife, Mary, of Kendall Park and Mark Kelly and his wife, Trish, of North Plainfield; grandchildren, Cian, Cameron, Eva, and Kevin; sister Helen Crorken and her husband Tommy; brother-in-law William Paterson and his wife Betty; brother-in-law John Judge; sister-in-law Anne Paterson and many loved nieces and nephews in Scotland.
Funeral services will take place on Friday, September 4, 2020 at 9:45 a.m. from Costello-Greiner Funeral Home, 44 Green Street (at Barron Avenue), Woodbridge. A Funeral Liturgy will follow at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Andrew Catholic Church, Avenel. Cremation will be private. Visitation for family and friends will be on Thursday from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Scots American Club at 40 Patterson St, Kearny NJ in Mr. Kelly's memory would be greatly appreciated by his family.
