Richard D. Rooney passed away on Wednesday, May 17, 2023 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Rahway. He was 72 years old.

Born in Camden, he has resided in Carteret for over 20 years.

Mr. Rooney graduated from Glen Rock High School and served with the United States Navy from 1970 until 1972; and was a longtime member of American Legion Post #87, Woodbridge, where he was installed as Commander earlier this month.

He was employed as a tractor trailer and taxi driver for many years, most recently with Scooter Taxi of Colonia.

An excellent musician, Rich enjoyed playing guitar, working with model cars and spending time with his canine friend, Martini. He cherished traveling, listening to music and dining out with his partner, Elaine; and viewing model railroad displays with his grandson, Hunter.

He was predeceased by his parents, Lillian and David Rooney; and brother in law, Donald Goldberg.

Surviving are his beloved longtime companion and partner, Elaine; her sons, Jason Zapata and his wife, Kimberly, of Staten Island, NY and Justin Zapata and his wife, Stephanie, of Blackwood; loving sister, Ruth Goldberg and her daughters, Debbie and Kerrianne, and their children, Alicia, Lillianna, Sophia and Ryan; and cherished grandchildren, Amelia and Hunter.

Visitation for family and friends will be on Monday, May 22, 2023 from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Costello-Greiner Funeral Home, 44 Green Street at Barron Avenue in Woodbridge. Cremation will be private.

In lieu of flowers contributions to American Legion Post 87, 314 Berry Street, Woodbridge, NJ 07095 in Rich's memory would be greatly appreciated by his loved ones.
