Dr. Raymond T. Caffrey passed away on Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at his home in the Iselin section of Woodbridge Township. He was 68 years old. Born in Elizabeth, he resided in Edison before moving to Iselin 43 years ago. Dr. Caffrey earned his PHD from NYU and was an adjunct professor of English with Kean University at the Union and Toms River Campuses. He was a member of the DH Lawrence Society and the Modern Language Association. He was a communicant of St. Andrew Catholic Church in Avenel, where he was the parish historian and served on the parish council. He spent 20 years as a volunteer baseball coach in Iselin. He was predeceased by his parents, Raymond P. and Regina A. Caffrey; and two brothers, Paul and Timothy Caffrey. Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Barbara Van Pelt Caffrey; two sons, Raymond T. Caffrey of Doylestown, PA and Thomas J. Caffrey and his wife, Karla, of Old Bridge; five sisters, Mary Anne Kennedy and her husband, Robert, Theresa Caffrey, Louise Caffrey, Gina Sardone and her husband, Robert, and Agnes Burkat and her husband, Steve; five brothers, Leo Caffrey and his wife, Maureen, Robert Caffrey and his wife, Jayne, John Caffrey and his wife, Gail, Patrick Caffrey and his wife, Jill, and Lawrence Caffrey; three grandchildren, Allie, Danny and Teagan Caffrey and many beloved nieces and nephews. Visitation will be on Sunday from 1:00 until 5:00 p.m. at Costello-Koyen Funeral Home, 399 Avenel Street, Avenel. Mass of the Resurrection will take place on Monday, March 10, 9:30 am at Saint Andrew Catholic Church, Avenel. Interment will be in Saint Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia.
