Paul Sohayda, Jr. passed away on Wednesday, June 17, 2020 at the Venetian Care Center in South Amboy. He was 81 years old.
Born in Perth Amboy, he has resided in Sayreville since 1962.
Mr. Sohayda was employed as a carpenter many years, first with Wallace J. Wilck, Inc. of Perth Amboy and later with Torcon, Inc. of Westfield.
He was a longtime active member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters & Joiners of America Union, Local 65. Prior to Local 65 merging with Local 1006, he served as Financial Secretary, President of Club 65, delegate to District Council for Local 65, trustee to District Council, ESAC State Standing Committee, Advisory Board member, Director of NJ Carpenters Apprentice Training & Education Fund and Trustee of the George Laufenberg Scholarship Fund.
He belonged to the First Presbyterian Church of Woodbridge and Raritan Lodge 61, Free and Accepted Masons, Perth Amboy which has since merged with Lafayette Lodge 27 in Rahway. He was also a member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Trenton, Crescent Temple A.A.O.N.M.S., and Central Jersey Shrine Club, where he served as president.
In his spare time Paul enjoyed reading, riding in his 1960 four-speed Chevrolet Corvette and golfing at Metuchen Golf and Country Club.
He was predeceased by his parents, Paul Sohayda, Sr. and Margaret Vargo Sohayda; and brother-in-law, Joseph Sokolowski.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Edith Licinsky Sohayda; sister, Carol Leitner, of Iselin; sister-in-law, Virginia Sokolowski, of Colonia; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will take place on Saturday, June 20, 2020 at 9:30 a.m. from Costello-Greiner Funeral Home (costello-greiner.com), 44 Green Street at Barron Avenue, Woodbridge. A service will follow at 10:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Woodbridge. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will take place on Friday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 3551 North Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19140 in Mr. Sohayda's memory would be greatly appreciated by his family.
