Obituary

May D. Sweeney passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at Roosevelt Care Center in Edison under the loving care of Haven Hospice. She was 83 years old.

Born in Jersey City, she resided in Linden before moving to the Fords section of Woodbridge Township in 1974. Recently a resident of Woodland Hills, Woodbridge Hills and Maple Tree Manor in Avenel.

Along with her husband Patrick, she owned and operated Garden State Salon Services in Linden for 20 years. During the same period she was a regional sales manager for Sarah Coventry Jewelry before joining The Kemper Insurance Company and worked until her retirement. May continued to keep busy and started working as a crossing guard in Linden where she quickly became the face that everyone knew and looked forward to seeing every day. She later also worked as a senior's companion for an assisted living resident to further spread her joy and love for people.

Mrs. Sweeney was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Woodbridge and president for life of the White Church Golden Agers; and past president of the Ladies Auxiliary, Knights of Columbus Council #2859, Linden.

Some of May's favorite times in her life were spent as a cheerleader for Snyder High School in Jersey City and cheering on the Philadelphia Eagles with her family as a lifelong season ticket holder. She also enjoyed spending time with family and friends at the family's log home on Lake Wallenpaupack in PA.

There was nothing that gave May more joy than being surrounded by her children and grandchildren. She instilled in her children the same love for family that she had. There was nothing that May wouldn't do for her family. She was the mother and grandmother that would do for others before doing for herself. She simply loved life and loved her family.

She was predeceased by her husband, Patrick Sweeney in 2001; granddaughter, Maeve O'Connor; and parents, Herman and May Bachmann (Anderson).

She is survived by her five children, Ronald of Plainfield, Donald (wife Joanne) of Cranford, Nancy Mullins (husband Jeff) of Fords, Colleen O'Connor (husband Bill) of Rumson and Patrick (wife Shelly) of Fairfax, VA; brother, Robert Bachmann (wife Cindy), of Marietta, GA; eleven grandchildren, Jimmy, Todd, Deanne, Erin, Katie, Will, Ian, Bridget, Meghan, Shannon and Riley and one great-grandchild, Emma; her best friend Louise Bezer.
