Obituary

After a truly wonderful life, Mary T. Tevis has danced her way to heaven. Mary grew up in Jersey City where she attended Polish school and Henry Snyder Junior High School. Although forced to drop out due to a skating injury, she returned to Woodbridge High school in her mid-sixties and finally graduated. Her early jobs included testing vacuum tubes at RCA in Jersey City and working as a secretary at Federal Wine and Liquor where the future state senator Matthew Feldman was one of her managers. A lover of the Polka, she met her husband, John, at a dance and they were wed in 1949 at Our Lady of Czestochowa Church in Jersey City. Moving to Avenel shortly afterwards, she spent her early years of marriage as a dedicated mother to her two children and, later in life, to her grandchildren. She returned to work in the late sixties as a secretary and numerical typist for the Central Jersey Steel and Strapping Company. She and her husband were, throughout their life in Avenel, devoted parishioners of St. Andrews Church and members of the St. Vincent de Paul Society with Mary also active with the Rosary Society. She was also an active bowler--most recently with the Clark Jaycee-ettes--until age-related issues required her to retire. She made everyone who knew her smile. She was predeceased by her husband, John; her parents, Francis and Victoria; her brother, Edward; her sisters Genevieve and Blanche, and her daughter-in-law, Kate Tevis. Her survivors include her daughter, Donna Isidron and her son-in-law, Otto; their children, her grandchildren, Matthew and Victoria; and her son Robert. Visitation will be held from 4pm until 8pm on Monday, August 5 at the Costello-Koyen Funeral Home, 399 Avenel Street in Avenel. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 6 at 9:30 am at St. Andrews Church in Avenel. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Andrews Church, 244 Avenel St., Avenel, NJ 07001.
