Marta Cruz, 86, of Avenel, passed away at JFK Medical Center on September 7.

Born in Havana, Cuba to mother Rosario Gonzalez and father Joaquim Rodrigues, she was the youngest of three siblings, Sisters Juana and Ofelia and one brother Joaquim.

Marta from a young age helped support her family through various jobs, including working as a coat check girl at Cuba's most popular clubs including the famed Tropicana.

She met her husband of sixty years Andres Cruz and together with their young son Andres Jr fled the communist regime for a better life in the United States. Here they welcomed their daughter Elvira to the family.

Marta was the epitome of a selfless mother and homemaker, and her generous and kind spirit touched countless family and friends. She later was blessed with a daughter in law and son in law and three grandchildren. She spoiled everyone that was lucky enough to enjoy her extraordinary cooking and legendary flan.

She will be missed greatly but her warmth and beautiful heart will live on forever.

Marta is survived by her devoted husband Andres; her son and daughter Andres and Elvira; her daughter in law Jean and grandchildren Alexander, Gabrielle and Jacob. She was predeceased by her son in law Edward.

A service will be held at Costello-Koyen Funeral Home located at 399 Avenel St, Avenel Wednesday September 12 ^th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
