Margaret Gyenes of Brick passed away on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at Ocean Medical Center in Brick. She was 87 years old. Born in Budapest, Hungary; She resided in Sewaren most of her life before moving to Brick eight years ago. Margaret's claim to fame was all the love she put into making her famous cabbage rolls (toltottkaposzta) which her family and friends delighted in eating. She enjoyed dancing and along with her husband, won trophies for their dance moves at the Annual Grape Dance in which the Hungarians celebrate the harvest of the grapes for wine. The dance has been in existence since the middle ages. Mrs. Gyenes was a member of The Hungarian Reformed Church of Woodbridge where she belonged to the Ladies Guild. Mrs. Gyenes was proud of her Hungarian heritage and belonged to the Lorantffy Guild and The Hungarian-American Club of Woodbridge. She was predeceased by her husband Frank Gyenes who passed away in 1990; a son Stephen Gyenes who passed away in 2009; and her parents Stephen and Elizabeth Sohajda Renyo. She is survived by her daughter Laura Gavan and her husband Brendan of Point Pleasant, NJ; Two grandchildren Brady Gavan and Liam Gavan of Point Pleasant; a sister Elizabeth of Hungary; a brother Stephen Renyo of Hungary; and many wonderful family members and friends. Visitation will be Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at Costello-Greiner Funeral Home, 44 Green Street at Barron Avenue in Woodbridge. The funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Interment will be in Cloverleaf Memorial Park, Woodbridge.
