Obituary

Leonard J. Minkler, Sr. passed away on Sunday, April 13, 2014 at JFK Medical Center in Edison. He was 87 years old. Born in Albany, NY, he resided in Queens, NY before moving to Woodbridge 58 years ago. Mr. Minkler was a printer, and worked in New York before working at Quinn and Boden's, Cohen Printing and Plymouth Printing in New Jersey until retiring from the International Typographic Workers Union. He then worked for the Middlesex County Vocational System at the Woodbridge campus until his retirement. Leonard was a member of Woodbridge Volunteer Fire Company Number 1 for the past 56 years. He served as Lieutenant, Captain, Assistant Chief and as Chief in 1971.He also served as Chaplain, Vice President and as President in 1991 and 1992. At the time of his death he was still an active member. He also served two terms as Fire Commissioner for District 1 in Woodbridge; and was a life member of the Woodbridge Exempts Association, life member of the NJ State Exempts Association, life member of the NJ State Firemen's Association and life member and past secretary of the Woodbridge Township Fire Officer's Association. Until last year Leonard was secretary for the NJ Exempt Executive Committee and was in charge of the State Exempts Annual Convention Book. Leonard was predeceased by his wife, Margaret, his parents, Harold and Caroline Minkler and two sisters, Geraldine Scher and Ruth Masoero. He leaves behind two sons, Leonard, Jr. and his wife, Nancy, and Robert Sr. and his wife, Catherine; five grandchildren, Robert Minkler, Jr. and his wife, Kaili, Mark Minkler and his wife, Joelle, Eileen Minkler, Michael Early and Brian Early; and six great grandchildren, Logan, McKenzie, Hudson, Charley, Hudson and Ryleigh. Funeral services will take place on Thursday, April 17, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. from Costello-Koyen Funeral Home (www.costello-koyen.com), 399 Avenel Street, Avenel. A Funeral Liturgy will follow at 10:30 a.m. at Saint James Catholic Church, Woodbridge. Interment will be in Saint James Cemetery, Hopelawn. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 2:00 until 4:00 and 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Woodbridge Fire Company, 418 School Street, Woodbridge, NJ 07095.
