Joseph S. Gyenes passed away on Friday, January 13, 2023 at his home in Woodbridge. He was 71 years old.

Born in Rahway on November 1, 1951 to the late Ann and Joseph Gyenes, he was a lifelong resident of Woodbridge.

A 1969 Graduate of Woodbridge High School, Mr. Gyenes received his associate's degree from Middlesex College in 1972; bachelor's degree from Kean University in 1974; and master's degree from Columbia University in 1981. He went on to teach at Middlesex County Vocational and Technical High Schools for 35 years before his retirement.

Joe was a longtime member of Saint Thomas the Apostle Byzantine Catholic Church in Rahway; proud member of the International Assocation of Approved Basketball Officials, Board 33 for 48 years; and baseball and softball umpire for 50 years in Woodbridge Township, Middlesex County, and throughout the state of New Jersey. Joe was a beloved member of his church community. He was loved by family, friends, neighbors and all that were blessed with knowing him.

In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his brother, Gregory Gyenes, in 2020.

Surviving are his brother, Bruce Gyenes and his wife, Judith, of Woodbridge; nieces, Jennifer Ritz and her husband, Joel, of Cranford and Stefanie Gyenes and her significant other, Nathanael Boyle, of Woodbridge; and nephew, Gregory Gyenes, of Delanco.

Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, January 17, 2023 at 9:15 a.m. from Costello-Greiner Funeral Home, 44 Green Street, Woodbridge. An Office of Christian Burial will follow at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Thomas the Apostle Byzantine Catholic Church, Rahway. Interment will be in Saint Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia. Visitation for family and friends will be on Monday, January 16, 2023 from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
