Jose N. "Joe" Portugal passed away on Tuesday, September 13, 2022 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Rahway. He was 84 years old.

Born in Ilhavo, Portugal on December 10, 1937 to the late Julia and John Portugal, he came to the United States at age 16 and lived in Gloucester, MA and Elizabeth before moving to Carteret 52 years ago.

Mr. Portugal served in the United States Army from 1961 until 1963 in Fort Carson, CO before returning to New Jersey where he worked for US Metals in Carteret for 35 years before retiring as maintenance supervisor in 1992.

In addition to his parents, Joe was predeceased by his brother, Tony Portugal in 2006; and son in law, Peter R. Williams, in 2004.

Surviving are his loving wife of 60 years, Diane Dysko Portugal; daughters, JoAnn Williams of Edison and Lynn Lee and her husband, Richard, of Middletown; beloved grandchildren, Eric and his girlfriend, Amy, Nicole and Brian Lee; and loving nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, sisters in law and brothers in law.

Funeral services will take place on Saturday, September 17, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Costello-Koyen Funeral Home (costello-koyen.com), 399 Avenel Street, Avenel. Cremation will be private. Visitation for family and friends will be on Friday from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers contributions to Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital (stjude.org) in Joe's memory would be greatly appreciated by his family.
