Obituary

John R. "Jack" Powers, Sr. passed away on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at his home in the Port Reading section of Woodbridge Township. He was 70 years old.

Born in Jersey City, he has resided in Port Reading for 38 years.

Mr. Powers was employed by Verizon Communications as an installer for 30 years and was Chief Union Steward for Local 827 for 26 years. He served in the United States Air Force as a Staff Sergeant in the Security Police for two tours in Thailand and was Chaplain for Post 87, American Legion, Woodbridge.

He was a devoted NY Yankee fan and rarely missed an episode of Jeopardy; had a phenomenal memory, and enjoyed conversations with everyone covering all subjects.

Jack enjoyed watching his grandson, Chris, playing football at Woodbridge High School; was committee member for Troop 31, BSA for 25 years, going on all Scouting and Jamboree outings with his sons, John and Brian; was coach for Woodbridge Little League for 11 years; and a member of the Woodbridge American-Irish Association. He had many longtime friends from these organizations.

He was predeceased by his parents, Charles A. Powers, Sr. and Betty Miller Powers.

Surviving are his wife, Carol O'Meara Powers, with whom he would have celebrated their 45th Wedding Anniversary on April 7th; children, John Powers, Jr. and Brian Powers and his wife, Janine; grandson, Chris Powers; sister, Marilyn Noesges; brother, Charlie Powers and his wife, Donna; and nieces and nephews, Charlie, Kelly, Brianne, Max, Katey and Aiden.

Funeral services will take place on Saturday, April 7, 2018 9:00 a.m. from Costello-Greiner Funeral Home ( www.costello-greiner.com ) , 44 Green Street, Woodbridge. A Funeral Liturgy will follow at 9:30 a.m. at Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Port Reading. Interment will be in Clover Leaf Memorial Park, Woodbridge. Visitation for family and friends will be on Friday from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Contributions in Jack's memory to American Legion Post 87, 314 Berry Street, Woodbridge, NJ 07095 would be greatly appreciated by his family.
