John William Englert Sr., age 91, of Tinton Falls, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 11, 2018 at his home in Seabrook Village, Tinton Falls, NJ.
John was born in Newark, NJ on January 3, 1927 to the late John George Englert and Nellie Peters Englert. He grew up in Newark and attended school there. John served in the United States Navy from 1945-1946 as a Seabee after High School. He was deployed to Guam to rebuild airfields that were damaged in the war.
John married Eleanor Pariso on October 19, 1946 and they lived in Newark where their two sons, James and John Jr., were born. After moving to Avenel, their third son, Jeffrey, was born. John worked for Gross & Hecht Trucking Company for 38 years, delivering groceries to A&P stores all over New Jersey.
After John and Eleanor retired, they moved to Lavalette and lived full time in their beach house. John worked part time at the Ocean County Mall and in the summer he checked badges at the beach there. They eventually moved to Seabrook Village in Tinton Falls in 2005 and made many wonderful friends.
While living in Avenel, John was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Avenel, serving as an Elder, an usher and a dedicated member of the Property Care Committee. After moving to Lavalette, he served the Faith Lutheran Church in their food pantry and as an usher on Sunday mornings.
John was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. He was a faithful provider and skilled craftsman. He was generous with his time when called upon to help his children, especially with home repairs.
John was predeceased by his wife Eleanor, Sister Dorothy Jerome and her husband Joseph Jerome, brothers-in-law Norman Possiel and Anthony Giordano and daughter-in-law Judy Englert.
John is survived by his three sons, James of Avenel, John and his wife Dawn of Edison, Jeffrey and his wife Sue of Altoona, PA; four grandchildren: David Englert of Avenel, Kristy Battito and her husband Anthony of Brick, Kevin Englert and his wife Irene of Dover, NJ and Kerry Millan and her husband Peter Millan of Clarksville, TN; four great grandchildren, Mariana Englert, Sebastian Englert, Christopher Englert and Leanora Englert, all of Dover, NJ; three sisters-in-law-Pauline Possiel, Marilyn Giordano and Ann Benedek and her husband, Charles Benedek and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and many wonderful friends.
John's was a life well lived. He will be missed.
Visiting hours will be Friday, December 14, 2018 from 7:00 pm until 9:00 PM at Costello-Koyen Funeral Home ( www.Costello-koyen.Com ) 399 Avenel Street, Avenel. Burial will be private.
