Obituary

John James Cassidy passed away on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at his son's home in Somerville. He was 84 years old.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, he has resided in the Colonia section of Woodbridge Township since 1977.

John's first job was washing glasses in his parent's pub, Cassidy's Place, in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn.  When the kids of Bay Ridge were looking to play roller hockey, John co-founded the Bay Ridge hockey league, which he ran for 20 years. John owned and operated Alpha Graphics Supply for 20 years before his retirement.

John was a United States Marine Corps veteran. He belonged to Corporal Kevin J. Reinhard Detachment of the Marine Corps League and Colonia Memorial Post 6061, Veterans of Foreign Wars. John was also a communicant of Saint John Vianney Catholic Church in Colonia, a member of the American Irish Association of Woodbridge, and the Woodbridge Senior Billiards Club.

John enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his three granddaughters Meghan, Shannon and Tara-Rose.  He loved watching hockey, going to Rangers games, traveling to Ireland, Lake George and Lake Placid, drinking coffee with his friends in Dunkin Donuts and there seemed to be no shortage of breweries where he wanted to indulge in a tasting.

He was predeceased by his wife, Joan Cassidy, in 2011; parents, Mary Catherine (nee Sherlock) (Co. Sligo, Ireland) and Martin Cassidy (Co Mayo, Ireland); and sister, Louise Giroux.

Surviving are his son, Brian Cassidy and his wife, Beth, of Somerville; sisters, Kathleen Coopey of Staten Island, NY and Eileen Ratel of Florida; and grandchildren, Meghan Dugan and her husband, Jeff, of Somerville, Shannon Nicholls and her husband, Chad, of Somerville and Tara-Rose Cassidy and her fiancé, Josh, of Arlington, VA.

Visitation for family and friends will be on Wednesday, June 30, 2021 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Costello-Koyen Funeral Home, 399 Avenel Street, Avenel.
