Janet E. Davenport Thompson of Whiting passed away on Friday, February 22, 2013 at home. She was 78 years old. Born in Carbondale, PA; she was raised in Lyndhurst, NJ moving to the Avenel section of Woodbridge Township in 1967 residing there until moving to Lakewood in 2004, and then Whiting for the past 6 years. Mrs. Thompson was a 1952 graduate of Lyndhurst High School and was employed as a clerk for the Woodbridge Township Board of Education at Woodbridge High School for many years retiring in 1996. She was a former member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Edison, having served on various committees and as secretary of the Administrative Council for 10 years. In 2005 she joined the Harvey Memorial United Methodist Church in Point Pleasant later joining the Whiting United Methodist Church. Mrs. Thompson was a former President of the AFT/WTFT clerks and secretaries union, past vice-president of the WTEA, and a past member of the Middlesex County AFL/CIO. She was predeceased her husband of 44 years Donald Thompson who died in 2004; a son Michael A. Davenport who died in 1956; her parents Raymond A. "Al" Hunter who died in 1990, her mother Elizabeth "Dibby" Wright Hunter who died in 2002, and sister Shirley Walker-Lloyd in 2012. She is survived by a daughter Susan Riley and her husband Larry of Arkansas; three sons William R. Davenport and his wife Sharon of Maryland, Gary A. Davenport and his wife Karen of Georgia, and Terry P. Thompson and his wife Maureen of Fords; 7 grandchildren Erik, Cory, Rebecca, & Heather May, Mark & Matthew Davenport,Alan Thompson; 6 Great-grandchildren Christopher and Carly Marzella, Alexander, Mollie & Erik May, Chloe May, ; two sisters Judy Hunter of Arizona and Karen Petriccione and her husband Peter of Stillwater, NJ; six nieces and nephews; several great-nieces and nephews; and her first husband Richard A. Davenport. A Memorial service will take place on Saturday, March 2, 2013 1:00 p.m. at The Wesley United Methodist Church 5053 Woodbridge Avenue, Edison, NJ.
