Obituary

James V. Tavormina passed away Friday, May 2, 2025 at Overlook Medical Center in Summit. He was 64 years old.

"Jim" as he was lovingly referred to by family and friends was born in Elizabeth on August 3, 1960, he resided in Rahway before moving to Woodbridge in 1988.

Jim graduated from Thomas Edison Vocational School in Elizabeth and was employed by Verizon Communications as a network technician for 39 years before retiring from their Edison central office in 2020.

Jim was the proud co-owner of Rivalry Sports, which has successfully served many schools and departments of the Woodbridge Township community.

Jim also spent many cherished years as the head coach for the girls varsity soccer team at Saint Thomas Aquinas High School. Jim was a beloved coach, winning multiple Coach of the Year titles, a N.J. State Championship in 2013 and was inducted into the STA Coaching Hall of Fame in 2018.

He was predeceased by his father, Jacob Tavormina, in 2022.

Surviving are his loving wife of 43 years, Nancy Knego Tavormina; daughter and son in law, Megan and Joe Furrevig, of Old Bridge; son and daughter in law, James R. and Robin Tavormina, of Hamilton; daughter of the heart, Kaitlynn Grogan, of Woodbridge; mother, Antoinette Tavormina, of Manchester; sister, Lori Thum, of Winter Springs, FL; brother, Rocco Tavormina, of Warminster, PA; and beloved grandchildren, Juliana, Ryann, Lucy and Jack.

Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects on Tuesday, May 6, 2025 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Costello-Greiner Funeral Home, 44 Green Street, Woodbridge. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. at Saint James Catholic Church, Woodbridge. Cremation will be private.
