Obituary

Helen Derewsky of the Avenel section of Woodbridge Township passed away on Sunday, May 26, 2013 at home. She was 94 years old. Born in Bethlehem, PA, she resided in Avenel for most of her life. A 1936 graduate of Woodbridge High School, she attended the Beauty Culture Academy where she graduated in 1937. Mrs. Derewsky owned and operated Helen's Beauty Shop in Fords for 10 years. During World War II she served as a Civilian Clerk in Florida while her husband served in the United States Air Force. After World War II she went into the field of real estate where she was an associate of Bertagna Real Estate, retiring in 1980. The Derewsky family has long legacy with Avenel Fire Co. #1, spanning 3 generations of fireman. Mrs. Derewsky was a life member and past president of the Avenel Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary as well as a life member of the Middlesex County and New Jersey State Firemen's Ladies Auxiliary. Very active in Community affairs, she was a longtime Democratic 4th ward District 14 Committeewoman; and served as treasurer of Woodbridge Townships 325th Anniversary Committee . She was a communicant of St. Andrew Catholic Church, a member of the Avenel Golden Circle Senior Citizens, St. Andrew's Altar-Rosary Society, the Avenel Democratic Club and a former member of the A.A.R.P. She was predeceased by her husband, Avenel Fire Department Ex-Chief Stanley Tracey Derewsky; her parents, Elizabeth and Coleman Barney; and two brothers, Coleman and Steve Barney. She is survived by two sons, Stanley Derewsky of Avenel and Dennis Derewsky and his wife, Linda, of Statesville, N.C.; two grandsons, Brett Derewsky and his wife, Kimberly, and Scott Derewsky and his wife, Suzanne; and two granddaughters Jennifer Derewsky and Samantha Derewsky; and a great granddaughter Gabrielle Derewsky. Funeral will take place on Friday, May 31, 2013 at 9:15 a.m. from Costello-Koyen Funeral Home, 399 Avenel Street, Avenel. A Funeral Liturgy will follow at 10:00 a.m. at St. Andrew R.C. Church, Avenel. Interment will be in St. Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm.
