Glen Robert "Big Guy" Shaffer passed away on Wednesday, February 12, 2020 at McLeod Seacoast Medical Center in Little River, SC. He was 79 years old.

Born in Elizabeth, he resided in the Avenel section of Woodbridge Township for many years before moving to Longs, SC.

Mr. Shaffer was employed as store engineer with Sears, Roebuck & Company for 35 years before his retirement.

He was a United States Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War; and belonged to the Marine Corps League. He was also a communicant of Saint Andrew Catholic Church, Avenel; member of Saint Andrew Post 5088, Knights of Columbus, Avenel, Rev. John J. Griffith General Assembly 4th degree; and former longtime president of Avenel Youth Bowling League.

Mr. Shaffer was predeceased by his parents, Dorothy and Alvin Shaffer; and sister, Virginia Shimko.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Carol Koss Shaffer; children, Karen Shaffer of Woodbridge and David Shaffer and his wife, Yi Chun, of Somerville; brother, Bernie Shaffer and his wife, Kathy, of Little Egg Harbor; brother in law, John Shimko, of Howell, nieces and nephews, Jay, Lisa, Jeffrey, Melissa and Ashley; and grandchildren of the heart, Pati, Emily and Robert Bailey.

Funeral services will take place on Friday, February 21, 2020 at 8:45 a.m. from Costello-Koyen Funeral Home, 399 Avenel Street, Avenel. A Mass of Resurrection will follow at 9:30 a.m. at Saint Andrew Catholic Church, Avenel. Interment will be in Saint Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia. Visitation will be on Thursday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers contributions to Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital or the Salvation Army in Glen's memory would be greatly appreciated by his family.
