Elizabeth M. Mullen passed away on Saturday, September 12, 2015 at her home in Perth Amboy, surrounded by her loving family. She was 90 years old. Born in South Amboy on January 23, 1925 to the late Elizabeth Scully Balint and Alexander Balint, she resided in Morgan before moving to Perth Amboy in 1951. Elizabeth graduated from Saint Mary's High School, South Amboy and attended Rutgers University. She worked as a medical secretary at the office of Dr. Margaretten in Perth Amboy before raising her family. She was a longtime communicant of Saint Mary Catholic Church and Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Perth Amboy; and had served as a volunteer at Barbara E. Cheung Memorial Hospice in Edison, bringing love, patience and compassion to those she cared for. A truly warm and wonderful person, Elizabeth enjoyed the company of family and friends and her canine sidekick, "Chief". Thoughts of her will always bring to mind a kind heart, beautiful smile and great sense of humor. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, former Perth Amboy Police Chief Edward J. Mullen, Jr., in 1994; and a brother, Allen Balint. She will be happily remembered by her children, Mary Newman and her husband, Rainer, of Yardley, PA, Margaret Kmiec and her husband, Andrew, of Matawan, Elizabeth Ann Degenhardt and her husband, Steven, of Bluffton, SC, Edward R. Mullen and his wife, Andrea, of Iselin, Patricia Malloy and her husband, Peter, of Woodbridge, Joan Gorey and her husband, Christopher, of Cranford and James Mullen and his wife, Lisa, of Old Bridge; grandchildren, Jason DeMarco, Kara Sakowski, Kris Kmiec, Michael Newman, Edward A. Mullen, Barbara Kenney, Amanda Mullen, Matthew Degenhardt, Katherine Mullen, Kristen Mullen and Joseph Degenhardt; nine great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Margaret Healy and Alice LoCascio; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be on Tuesday, September 15, 2015 from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Costello-Greiner Funeral Home, 44 Green Street at Barron Avenue in Woodbridge. Funeral services will be on Wednesday morning at 9:15 a.m. from the funeral home. A Mass of Resurrection will follow at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Stephen's Catholic Church, Perth Amboy. Interment will be in Saint Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia. In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution to the VNA Health Group Hospice (vnahg.org), 176 Riverside Avenue, Red Bank, NJ 07701 in Elizabeth's memory would be appreciated.
