Dorothy D.
Sylvernal
December 12, 1933 — May 30, 2017
Dorothy D. Sylvernal passed away on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at her daughter's home in Colonia. She was 83 years old.
Born in Newark, she resided in the Iselin section of Woodbridge Township for most of her life before moving to Edison 11 years ago.
Only Dorothy's love for her daughters, granddaughter and family eclipsed her love for crafting and antiquing. She loved to knit and crochet. Throughout the years, she sold and donated her wares from her shops, including, Dot's Spot, and her homes and craft shows. She especially enjoyed knitting sweaters and hats for friends and the less fortunate. Just last summer she created and donated 17 knitted caps for chemo patients.
Dot had an artistic eye; and enjoyed holidays with family or a quiet afternoon playing mahjong with friends. She always saw the best in people; enjoyed life and made friends wherever she went. She passed on her flair for life to everyone she met.
She was predeceased by her husband Robert J. Sylvernal, in 1998; a daughter, Dawn Sylvernal, in 1973; and a sister, Helen Martino, in 2016.
She is survived by two daughters, Robin Surma and her husband, Mike, of Colonia and Pamela Gelenites and her husband, Paul, of Livingston; a granddaughter, Kaitlyn; a brother, Victor Dzitko, of Delhi, NY; several nieces and nephews; and her best friend and companion, Richard Ponik.
Funeral services will take place on Friday June 2, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Costello-Koyen Funeral Home (www. costello-koyen.com), 399 Avenel Street, Avenel. Cremation will be private. Visiting hours will be on Thursday from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m.
