Daniel T. Basil passed away on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at his home in the Avenel section of Woodbridge Township. He was 84 years old. Born in Brooklyn, he resided in North Bergen before moving to Avenel 49 years ago. Mr. Basil retired as a driver after 11 years with Middlesex County Area Wide Transportation in 2007; and had previously worked as a weighmaster with Schiavone-Bonomo Steel in Jersey City and a sales person with Ehlers Spice Company in New York. He was a faithful communicant of St. Andrew Catholic Church in Avenel, where he served as an usher, lector, Eucharistic minister and sacristan; was a third degree member, past Grand Knight and Chapter Chair for Saint Andrew Council 5088, Knights of Columbus, Avenel; and was a fourth degree member of Rev. John J. Griffin General Assembly where he served on the color guard. He was also a member and past president of Golden Circle, Avenel Seniors, past president of the Avenel Democratic Club, honorary member of Avenel Fire Company, served as a Democratic Committeeman, coached youth bowling and baseball and played "Danny the Elf" at Christmas time for many years. Mr. Basil was predeceased by two sisters, Carol Ferullo and Barbara Ford. Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Margaret Sheahan Basil; three daughters, Diane Troast and her husband, Jack, of Browns Mills; Jane Hanks and her husband, Walter, of Avenel and Maureen Basil of Syracuse, three granddaughters, BreAnn Troast and Danielle and Kimberly Hanks; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at 9:15 a.m. from the Costello-Koyen Funeral Home, 399 Avenel Street, Avenel. A Funeral Liturgy will follow at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Andrew Catholic Church, Avenel. Entombment will be in Saint Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia. Visitation will be on Monday from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
