Charles Gastgaber passed away on Friday, September 22, 2017 at his home in Point Pleasant. He was 87 years old.
Born in Perth Amboy, he resided in Woodbridge for many years before moving to Point Pleasant 12 years ago. He graduated from Perth Amboy High School, Class of 1948 and attended Seton Hall University.
Charlie owned and operated Sunnyside Products in Perth Amboy for 25 years, until 2003; and was awarded two patents in connection with the operation of the business. He was a communicant of Saint Martha's Church in Point Pleasant and previously belonged to Saint James Catholic Church in Woodbridge, where he had served as Eucharistic Minister.
He was a United States Marine Corp Veteran of the Korean War; and belonged to Avenel Memorial Post 7164, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Military Order of the Purple Heart, the Marine Corps League, the First Marine Division Association; and the American Legion. He earned The Korean Service Medal, Purple Heart Medal, United Nations Service Medal and The National Defense Service Medal.
Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Doreen Witkowski Gastgaber; his children, Alicia Gastgaber of Port Reading, Melissa Miller (Gabriel) of Montclair, Megan Small (Jason) of Virginia Beach, VA and John Gastgaber of Point Pleasant; a sister, Gloria Rowin, of Woodbridge; and 4 grandchildren, Jordan Gastgaber, Charlie Small and Leon and Lula Miller.
Charlie loved the sea, and was happiest on his beloved boat with friends and family. "Pop Pop," as his grandchildren called him, enjoyed telling tall tales of all the fish he almost caught.
Funeral services will be on Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at 9:45 a.m. from Costello-Greiner Funeral Home (costello-greiner.com), 44 Green Street, Woodbridge. A Mass of Resurrection will follow at 10:30 a.m. at Saint James Catholic Church, Woodbridge. Entombment will be in Saint James Chapel Mausoleum. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions to Building Homes for Heroes (buildinghomesforheroes.org), 65 Roosevelt Avenue, Suite 105, Valley Stream, NY 11581 in Charlie's memory would be greatly appreciated by his family.
