Obituary

Charles Banko, Sr. of the Sewaren section of Woodbridge Township passed away on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at JFK Hartwyck at Edison Estates Care Center in Edison. He was 88 years old. Born in Keasbey, he was a lifelong resident of Woodbridge Township. Mr. Banko was a Police Officer with the Woodbridge Township Police Department for 36 years, before retiring in 2007. He was also a United States Marine Corps veteran, serving during World War II, where he was wounded in the Battle of Iwo Jima and awarded a Purple Heart. He was a member P.B.A. Local #38, Woodbridge, V.F.W. Post #7164, Avenel and American Legion Post #87, Woodbridge; and a former member of the Keasbey Fire Company where he had served as Chief; and a former member of The Hungarian Reformed Church of Woodbridge. Mr. Banko was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Julia Kopenash Banko. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Sandra Vecsey Banko; four sons, Charles Banko, Jr. of Woodbridge, Steven Banko of Arkansas, Bruce Banko of Avenel and David Banko of Sewaren; and three grandchildren. Visitation will take place on Friday, February 27, 2015 from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the Costello-Greiner Funeral Home, 44 Green Street at Barron Avenue, Woodbridge. Funeral services will be private.
