Catherine (nee Zarsky) Hofmann, 89, of Avenel, NJ, passed away suddenly on April 13, 2016.

Catherine was born in Jersey City, NJ, raised in Woodbridge Township, and lived in Avenel since 1946. She was a communicant of Saint Andrew Roman Catholic Church since its inception. "Kay" was an active member and held offices in the Altar Rosary Society, Golden Circle, Avenel Seniors, PTAs and Girl Scouts.

During World War II, Catherine was a telephone operator who assisted soldiers at Camp Kilmer in contacting their families. In later years she was employed by National State Bank's mortgage department and by the Rutgers University bake shop.

Catherine was well-known for her outstanding baking ability, especially her chiffon cake, zucchini bread, chocolate chip cookies and Rice Krispie treats.

For 35 years, Catherine was the loving wife of John J. Hofmann until his death in 1981. Surviving are their children John Jr., (Claudia), Michael (Maryjane), Cathy Patla (the late Raymond), and Patti Carno (John); grandchildren, Michael Jr., Stacy, John III and Anne Marie Hofmann and Tyler Patla; and great-grandson, Sampson Hofmann.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 from 3 until 7 p.m. at Costello-Koyen Funeral Home (www.costello-koyen.com), 399 Avenel Street, Avenel, NJ. Funeral services will be on Thursday, April 21, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. from the funeral home thence to Saint Andrew Catholic Church, Avenel where a Mass of Resurrection will take place at 9:30 a.m. Interment will be in Saint Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia.
