Obituary

Carol A. Gallagher Nevins passed away on Tuesday, March 28, 2023. She was 86 years old.

Born in Elizabeth on September 3, 1936, to the late Aurelia and Theodore Gallagher, she has resided in the Avenel section of Woodbridge Township for 62 years.

Mrs. Nevins was employed as a sales representative with Valvoline Oil for 25 years before retiring in 1994.

She was a communicant of Saint Andrew Catholic Church in Avenel; active with Saint Andrew Council 5088, Knights of Columbus and with Merchants and Drovers Tavern, Rahway; and was a former member of Golden Circle, Avenel Seniors.

Known as "Wela" to her grandchildren and friends, Carol loved spending time with family, dancing and listening to music; and was an early example of a woman's and mother's ability to raise a family solo, rising to any obstacle in order to preserve and protect her family.

In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her daughter, Nancy Nevins Thompson; sister, Frances Polly; grandsons, Michael DiLeo and Robert DiLeo; former husband, John Joseph Nevins, Jr.; and longtime companion, Peter T. Joe.

Surviving are her children, Valerie DiLeo and her husband, Michael, of Fairhope, AL, Theodore Nevins and his wife, Kathy, of Belleville, OH, Jack Nevins and his wife, Sue, of Avenel and Kelly Layton and her husband, Glenn, of Avenel; grandchildren, Eddie Thompson, Kristen Nevins, John Nevins IV, Raymond Nevins, Nicholas Layton, Michelle Layton, Tyler Layton, Ashley Hindes, Ally Hindes, Shannon Hindes and Kailey Hindes ; and great grandchildren, Quinn Nevins Harrison and Cal Claywell.

Funeral services will take place on Saturday, April 1, 2023 at 9:30 a.m. from Costello-Koyen Funeral Home, 399 Avenel Street, Avenel. A Mass of Resurrection will follow at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Andrew Catholic Church, Avenel. Interment will be in Saint Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia. Visitation for family and friends will be on Friday from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers contributions to Saint Andrew Catholic Church, 244 Avenel Street, Avenel, NJ 07001 in Mrs. Nevins' memory would be greatly appreciated by her family.
