Port Reading

Obituary

Barbara Ann Broehl passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 23rd, 2025 at her home in the Port Reading section of Woodbridge Township, with her loving family at her side.

Born in Carteret on March 20th, 1945, to the late Lottie and Michael Paloti, Barbara lived a life filled with love and joy. Barbara attended Carteret High School, worked as a bus aide for the Woodbridge School system, and managed a newspaper route with The Home News Tribune in her neighborhood.

In 1967, Barbara and her late-beloved husband, Dieter "Pete" Broehl, moved to Port Reading, where they planted roots and grew their family. Barbara's focus was being a homemaker; she devoted her life to her husband and raising her 5 children. She kept a house filled with love and laughter.

Barbara found no greater joy than being with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Barbara absolutely loved playing games like Rumi-Cube, 500 Rummy, and 2500, especially with her family and friends. Those who knew Barbara well knew that she loved making little bets: "Wanna bet a dollar on the football game?" she'd ask before the Sunday game or while dealing cards she'd say, "Let's play penny-a-point!". Although she enjoyed taking trips to Atlantic City and Las Vegas, these little wagers were never about the money for Barbara, they were always about bringing everyone closer together by adding a bit more excitement to the game. Barbara also belonged to the Sycamore Senior Center in Port Reading, where she enjoyed spending time with her friends and playing bingo.

She was a devout Catholic, and Barbara's faith was a cornerstone of her life. As a life-long parishioner of Divine Mercy Parish (formerly known as Holy Family Church) in Carteret, she found solace and strength in saying her daily prayers and praying the Rosary. Barbara instilled in her family the importance of faith, hope, and gratitude. She walked every day of her life as she will in the next -- in the footsteps of Jesus Christ.

In addition to her parents, Barbara was predeceased by her brother, Richard Paloti, and her beloved husband and life-long partner, Dieter "Pete" Broehl, though their love persisted for all of her days.

She is survived by her daughter, Joann Broehl of Port Reading; sons, Peter Broehl of Jacksonville, FL, Robert Broehl Sr. and his wife Judith, of New Egypt, Dennis Broehl and his wife Paula, of Carteret, and Matthew Broehl of Waldorf, MD. Grandchildren Michael, Jonathan and his husband Kris, Robert Jr., Joseph, Peter Jr. and his wife Sarah, Steven and his partner Lauren, and Brianna. Great-grandchildren Emma, Michael Jr., and Callie. Her inseparable sister Frances Schork of Toms River. As well as many friends and extended family who loved Barbara dearly.

Visitation for family and friends will be on Sunday, October 26th, 2025 from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Costello-Greiner Funeral home, 44 Green Street, Woodbridge, NJ. The family asks friends and loved ones to join them at Costello-Greiner Funeral Home for pre-mass funeral services on Monday, October 27th, 2025 at 9:15 AM.
