Arlene F. Smith passed away on Saturday, December 20, 2025 at her home in the Port Reading section of Woodbridge Township. She was 96 years old.
Born on March 28, 1929 in Jersey City to the late Mary and Michael Kowal, she has resided in Port Reading for 66 years.
She was a communicant of Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Port Reading.
Arlene was a beautiful and loving wife and mom who embraced her journey in life as just that, a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. She built and led her family with respect, love and consistency.
Second to her family, she found enjoyment with Dad at the church bingo, trips to Atlantic City and working in her yard. She will be dearly and forever missed
In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husband, William Joseph Smith, in 2003; sisters, Anna Kowal, Valerie Zgorzynski, Mary Carr and Frances Kowal; and brothers, Peter Kowal, Paul Kowal and Benjamin Kowal.
Surviving are her children, Cheryl Smith of Helmetta, Linda Szatkowski of Helmetta and William Smith and his fiancé, Patricia, of Old Bridge; sister, Dorothy Kowal, of North Arlington; grandchildren William Michael Smith and his wife Alana, Samantha Dreboty and her husband Darren of San Diego, CA; and great grandchildren, Delilah and Phoebe. Also devoted and loving Caregiver Lela.
Funeral services will take place on Saturday, December 27, 2025 at 9:15 a.m. from Costello-Greiner Funeral Home, 44 Green Street, Woodbridge. A Funeral Liturgy will follow at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Port Reading. Entombment will be in Holy Cross, Cemetery, North Arlington. Visitation for family and friends will be on Friday evening from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Contributions to Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 436 Port Reading Avenue, Port Reading, NJ 07064 in Mrs. Smith's memory would be greatly appreciated by her family.
