Anna Y. Smith passed away on Saturday, July 4, 2026 at her home in Whiting. She was 89 years old.

Born in Perth Amboy on September 25, 1936, to the late Salvatore Covino and Vita Maria Patruno Valetutto Covino, she was raised and lived most of her life in Port Reading before moving to Alabama and then Whiting.

She was employed as an office assistant at Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Port Reading many years ago.

Anna was a devout Catholic and was a communicant of Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Port Reading; a member of The Disabled American Veterans Ladies Auxiliary; and loved to bowl.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, William G. Smith, Sr.; daughter, Valerie Parker; son, Bruce Smith; and siblings, Lorenzo Valetutto, Angelo Valetutto, Angelina Covino, Salvatore Covino, Marge Gavor, Antoinette Frasca, Mary Gidaro, and Carmen Covino.

Surviving are her children, William George Smith, Jr. and his wife, Teresa, of Fort Pierce, FL, Larry Smith of Milford, DE, Timothy Smith and his wife, Patricia, of High Bridge and Donna Hoplock and her husband, Edward, of Toms River; brother, Joseph Covino and his wife, Cathy, of Port Reading; grandchildren, Edward Hoplock, Jr., Hailey Hoplock, Shea Disney, Charles Mishalski, Jr., William Smith III, Kyle Smith, Tyler Smith, Abigail Smith and Kelly Howard; and many great grandchildren and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will take place on Monday, July 13, 2026 at 9:15 am from Costello-Greiner Funeral Home, 44 Green Street, Woodbridge. A Funeral Liturgy will follow at 10:00 am at Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 436 Port Reading Avenue, Port Reading. Interment will be in Saint Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia. Visitation for family and friends will be on Sunday, July 12, 2026 from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers contributions to Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital (stjude.org) in Anna’s memory would be greatly appreciated by her loved ones.
