Albert Schmid passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at Aristacare at Cedar Oaks in South Plainfield. He was 84 years old. Born in New York City, and raised in Grossalfalterbach, Germany, he has resided in the Hopelawn section of Woodbridge Township for over 50 years. Originally a baker in Grand Central Station, Al then worked as a roofer with Rauh & Son in Elizabeth until his retirement. He was a communicant of Good Shepherd Parish, Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Perth Amboy; and a longtime active member and flag bearer of the Deutscher Club of Clark. Al was a renowned gardener whose home grown organic vegetables were a summer favorite. He also loved his early morning breakfast with the regulars at the Colonial in Fords. Mr. Schmid was predeceased by a daughter, Deborah Schmid; his parents, Albert and Anna Nutz Schmid; a son-in-law, Nick Manno; and a brother, Walter Schmid. Surviving are his loving wife of 64 years, Susanne Margaret Koller Schmid; a daughter, Lisa Schmid-Manno, of Perth Amboy; two sons, Gerry Schmid and his wife, Dina, of Chelmsford, MA and Rick Schmid and his wife, Tammie, of Howell; a sister, Helene Muschaweck, of Germany; Opa will be missed by his grandchildren, Zarah, Erika, Anthony, Justin and Kaitlyn; and his great grandchildren, Sydney and Sofia. Funeral services will take place on Friday, December 12, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Costello-Greiner Funeral Home (costello-greiner.com), 44 Green Street at Barron Avenue, Woodbridge. Interment will follow in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Hopelawn. Visitation will be on Thursday from 2:00 until 4:00 and 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, take a friend out for a drink in Al's memory.
